David Copperfield, an illusionist, is a huge name in showbiz and reflects the popularity that this art has among the public. In fact, the popularity of this art form has been so immense that it has trickled down and generated allied art forms like ventriloquism, puppetry, juggling, acrobatics and séances which have gained popularity from their association with the art of magic.

There are many different variants or genres of magic. Stage magic has always been viewed as contrived. The magician creates an ambience of mystery for the audience within which he can cocoon his act. But nowadays magicians are moving away from the stage and performing in front of live audiences without the help of stage hands or props. There are amazing feats of endurance and tests of spirit that are performed by magicians these days which are covered live on television and makes for popular viewing.  There have been movies made around the popularity of this art and some have showcased the life of popular magicians. Stage shows using elaborate props that cost astronomical sums are constructed for many magic shows. These grand shows conjure up illusions that tickle the credulity of the audience.
